Plastering FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we hear most.

What is the difference between skimming and plastering?

Skimming is a thin finish coat over a sound surface. Plastering can also mean applying thicker backing coats or rendering.

How long does plaster take to dry?

Drying depends on thickness, temperature and ventilation. Thin skim coats dry in days; thicker coats and lime can take much longer.

When can I paint new plaster?

When it is fully dry, which you can tell by an even, pale colour. Apply a mist coat first, and follow the paint maker's instructions.

Can you plaster over paint?

Sometimes, after the surface is properly keyed or primed. We check before quoting.

How much does plastering cost?

It depends on size, condition, access and finish. We give free written quotes.

Do I need to remove furniture?

Please clear as much as you can. We protect what remains.

Is plastering messy?

It can be. We use dust sheets and clean up.

What is float and set?

A thicker backing coat plus a smooth set coat, used on uneven walls.

Do you fix ceilings that are sagging?

Yes, but please keep the room clear if plaster is bulging.

Can you match old plaster mouldings?

Often, yes. It depends on the profile and what remains.

What is lime plaster used for?

It suits older solid-wall buildings that need to breathe.
