Lime plaster lets solid-wall buildings breathe. It is the traditional choice for older Cardiff and South Wales properties, and often required for listed and conservation work.
Why lime?
Older solid walls handle moisture by absorbing and releasing it. Impermeable modern plasters can trap damp; lime works with the wall instead of against it.
Lime plaster in practice
Lime is applied in coats, allowed to cure between them and finished with a lime putty or fine coat. It cures slowly and cannot be rushed, particularly in cold or wet weather.
Listed and conservation buildings
If your building is listed, changes may need consent. We can work to conservation guidance, but always check with the local authority before starting work.
Areas we cover for lime plastering
We take on lime plastering work across Cardiff and around 25 miles from the city centre, including Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly, Newport, Pontypridd and Cowbridge. See all the areas we cover.
Frequently asked questions
Is lime plaster more expensive?
Usually it costs more than gypsum because of materials and slower working. It can be the right long-term choice for old walls.
Can I paint lime plaster?
Yes, but use breathable paints such as limewash or mineral paint rather than vinyl finishes.
